In response to a recent rash of anti-gay bullying related suicides GLAAD requested that people wear purple today in support of LGBT teens everywhere.
The most high profile case (and the one you are most likely to be familiar with) is that of Tyler Clementi. Tyler Clementi was a freshman at Rutgers University. His roommate allegedly live-streamed him engaging in sexual activity with another man. Tyler jumped off a bridge shortly thereafter.
At least five other teenagers have taken their lives due to anti-LGBT related bullying.
LGBT teens (and LGBT people everywhere--adults included) deserve some respect. You do not have to agree with their sexual orientation, but you do not have the right to make their lives hell either.
LGBT teens are not the only teens experiencing cyber bullying. The internet has provided a new place for bullies to torment other children. Cyber bullying, and indeed bullying of any sort, should not be tolerated. Other teens should not allow it. Most especially, however, adults should not allow it.
If your child is being bullied, demand that something be done about it. Teachers, Parents, Principals: you all know who gets bullied and who does the bullying. Be an adult and put a stop to it. If your child is a bully then it is your job as a parent to teach them that such behavior is not acceptable. Do not turn a blind eye to your child's bad behavior. If someone accuses your child of being a bully then have a talk with your child and teach them not to act that way. That's your job. You are their parent, not their friend.
I am wearing purple today. I am wearing purple because I do not abide bullies. I do not accept that kind of behavior. I am wearing purple because I believe in tolerance, not ignorance. I am wearing purple because I believe in love and peace and goodness. Where's your purple?
